Hidden Gems of St. John's

Hey Guys,

We had just the best time in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The city is such a gorgeous place filled with character and hidden gems. Here are my favourite spots to go to in St. John’s:

Nonia

Founded in 1920, the Newfoundland Outport Nursing and Industrial Association is in the heart of downtown St. John’s on Water Street. Their shop is filled with hand-knit sweaters made by over 130 craftswomen from all around Newfoundland and its outports. I wore NONIA sweaters from as early as I could remember but haven’t had one since high school – obviously a problem we had to fix! Evan and I both picked up a new sweater this trip. His is a classic oatmeal sailor sweater, while mine is a red/pink pullover. It is perfect for walking the pups early in the morning.

The Inn by Mallard Cottage

Our favourite spot to stay in St. John’s, this 8-room hotel is tucked away in Quidi Vidi, and is about a 40-minute walk or 7-minute drive from downtown. The Inn is delightful! The rooms are big and bright and have so many thoughtful touches. A charcuterie board waits for you when you arrive, and coffee or tea and a selection of morning pastries are delivered to your room to start off each day. Evan’s favourite part of the Inn was the complimentary beer, wine and cocktail bar.

Quidi Vidi Brewery

Barely 2 minutes’ walk from Mallards Cottage Inn and overhanging Quidi Vidi harbour, you can sample Newfoundland’s best at a serious craft brewery.

Mallards Cottage

Across the street from the Inn, serving brunch and dinner. We had brunch here, and it was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend that one person does the daily menu as it comes with a sample box of a half-dozen take-home sweets!

The Duke of Duckworth

A St. John’s landmark fish and chip shop – if you can find it in the narrow stairway down to Water St. Get your chips “Newfie-style” with dressing (turkey stuffing) and gravy on top.

Signal Hill

A great viewing point of the city, harbour, and “Narrows”, the entrance to the harbour only 200 metres wide. Great views of the harbour of St. John’s. If the weather is nice, take advantage of the great walking paths.

Johnson Geo Centre

Probably my Dad’s favourite spot to visit. All about the geology and unique landscape that distinguishNewfoundland from almost everywhere else on earth. Great for ages seven and up!

Cape Spear

The most eastern point of North America. Just try to go on a calm wind day. We had to stay low to the ground to avoid being taken by the wind.

The Merchant Tavern

Located on Water Street and sister restaurant to the Famous Raymonds restaurant. We had amazing oysters here - highly recommend!
